Chorister of the Year 2024

The Chorister of the Year trophy was given to the Choir by Col. Peter Howells of Howells Jewellers, Haverfordwest, to be presented annually to the chorister who has worked exceptionally hard for the good of the choir.

The award this year was presented to Paul Childs, a member of the Baritone Section. Paul joined the choir in 2012. Paul has been the Treasurer of the choir for many years and was responsible for arranging a grant from the National Lottery which enabled the choir to purchase a new piano. Recently, Paul was instrumental in purchasing a portable AED which accompanies the choir wherever we go. Hope we never have to use it. Keep up the good work Paul.

To join us, your first port of call should be to contact our secretary William Miles. Once you’ve done that, you should come along to one of our practice sessions held at the Withybush Pavilion, Haverforwest (Mondays, 7.30pm to 9.30pm) to just to sit and listen to begin with. If you decide it’s not for you then that is completely fine!

From your initial approach, it would normally take around 3-6 months to become a fully-fledged member and to start appearing on stage with the choir. Ultimately, this will depend on your previous experience. But don’t worry if you’ve never sung in a choir before, many of our choristers were in the same boat!

Part of our process will be to establish which musical section you’re best suited to. There are four sections - 1st Tenor, 2nd Tenor, Baritone and Bass. This is sorted out by a simple run through of the musical scales with our Musical Director - who will obviously make sure that you’re able to sing in tune too! There are lots of myths and legends about Male Voice Choirs and the people who sing in them - and we have dispelled a few of these below!

Apart from the singing - which in itself is magical - being a member of a choir is a very social thing too! Aside from the odd stop at local hostelries after practices and concerts, the choir also travels to concerts overseas as well as to other parts of the UK.

We’d love to have you on board with us! So if you’re interested, fill out the form on this page and start your journey to becoming a chorister in the Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir!
